Vigil for the Panchen Lama
at the Chinese Embassy, London
from 6pm, Friday 25th April
Tibetans and supporters will be holding a vigil for the Panchen Lama in front of the Chinese Embassy in London on Friday 25th April 2008 starting at 6pm. The vigil will mark the 19th birthday of His Holiness the 11th Panchen Lama and will appeal to the Chinese Government for his immediate and unconditional release. Gedhun Choekyi Nyima was six years old when he was kidnapped by the Chinese authorities; he hasn't been seen since.

21st April - China launches education drive in Lhasa (Reuters)
In a bid to reinforce control in Lhasa, the Chinese authorities have launched an education campaign focused on officials and Party members. The campaign to "fight separatism, protect stability and promote development" is to focus on "unifying the thinking and cohesive strength of officials and the masses, deepening the struggle against separatism and counter-attacking the separatist plots of the Dalai clique". 20th April - Nepal authorises deadly force to stop Olympic torch protests (AP)
Nepalese soldiers and police guarding the slopes of Mount Everest have been authorised to shoot to stop any protests during China's Olympic torch run to the summit. Police and soldiers "have been given orders to stop any protest on the mountain using whatever means necessary, including use of weapons," Nepal's Home Ministry spokesman Modraj Dotel said, adding that the use of deadly force was authorized only as a last resort. 18th April - Over hundred Tibetans arrested in Rebkong County (TCHRD)
Over 100 Tibetans, including monks and lay people, were arrested on Thursday by the Chinese security forces for protesting in Rebkong County (Ch: Tongren), Malho TAP, Qinghai Province. Initially 22 monks from Rong Gonchen Monastery were arrested for staging a peaceful demonstration in the local market. A further 80 monks plus lay-people marched to the market demanding the release of the detained monks. Security forces beat the protestors and arrested around about 80 people. 18th April - Raid on Labrang Monastery: monks taken away as climate of fear prevails (ICT)
On April 14th-15th, just days after a protest by monks in front of a group of Western journalists, a large number of armed police arrived at Labrang Monastery in Sangchu County, Gannan, Gansu Province and took an unknown number of monks into custody. According to one source, armed troops are now deployed "in every corner of the monastery" and have searched all of the monks' quarters. Click here to read more...
